'Kalavaani' Oviya masters Tamil in quick time

At the recent press-meet held by the makers of ‘Kalavaani’, the second film of Vimal of ‘Pasanga’ fame, its heroine Oviya was present. More often than not, the heroines tend to skip the press-meet in order to avoid probing eyes and questions. Oviya, who hails from the neighbouring Kerala (which appears to have an ‘agreement’ with Kollywood to supply heroines), is very fluent in Tamil.

Her fluency and command over Tamil is attributed to director Sargunam’s insistence that she learn Tamil first before starting the shooting of the film. In the film, Oviya’s character was required to speak in a slang and dialect followed in and around the Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu.

Oviya was taught to speak clearly and legible in the Thanjavur accent by the director, it was informed. Sargunam actually changed Oviya’s actual name, which was Helen. So, that’s how Helen became Oviya. Naseer, the debutant producer of the film, happens to be the manager of leading stars Madhavan and Trisha.

Had he wanted, Naseer could have brought together Madhavan and Trisha again on-screen for ‘Kalavaani’. Why did he then opt for Vimal and Oviya? Pat came the reply from Naseer who says that the ‘subject’ of the film wasn’t suitable to the pair of Maddy and Trisha and said that he has plans to cast them together in future.

‘Kalavani’ Audio Launched

‘Kalavani’, directed by debutant Sargunam and produced by Mani Ratnam’s former production manager Nazir, had its audio launched here today at Satyam Cinemas, Chennai.

Mani Ratnam launched the audio by presenting the first CD to Sasikumar and spoke thereafter telling that Nazir had always been working hard. He added saying he was happy seeing Nazir produce his first movie.

Also at the event was Trisha who expressed similar feelings about Nazir, who was a former manager to Trisha and Madhavan. Others at the event were Parthiban who made everyone laugh with his witty words, director Samuthirakani, actress Saranya with the cast and crew of the movie.

‘Kalavani’ has music composed by S S Kumaran who did ‘Poo’ earlier. He acknowledged the director and producer of the movie for giving him a chance.

Mani Ratnam launches Kalavani audio

Director Mani Ratnam, who rarely attends film functions, has launched the audio of Kalavani on Monday at Sathyam Cinemas. The film is produced by S Nazir, a former production executive of Mani Ratnam.

After the launch, Mani Ratnam said, "Nazir is still the same today as he was many years ago when he worked for me.

He bared the entire brunt of my work whenever there was a problem even in the direction department and we would lay the blame on the production side! For that I owe him an apology. I am very happy that he has turned producer today and is making a film like Kalavani with new directors and new actors. This shows his love for cinema. His success is like my own success to me.

”The audio CD was received by director Sasikumar in the presence of Trisha, Saranya, Parthiban, Na Muthukumar, RK Selvamani, hero Vimal, heroine Oviya ( debutants), director Vijay and new director Sargunam who debuts with this film. The music is by SS Kumaran who returns after his debut in Poo.The interesting part of the function was that, each speaker was called upon to recount some tale of petty thievery, fraud or something naughty they have done in their lives, in keeping with the theme of the title of the film.

Maniratnam Gives, Sasikumar Accepts

The audio of Kalavani is all set to be launched on April 19th. The audio release function will be held at the popular Kamala Theatre in Chennai. Ace director Mani Ratnam will release the first copy and director-actor M Sasi Kumar will receive it from him.

Kalavani is directed by newbie director Sargunam, an erstwhile associate of director Vijay. The music for this film has been scored by SS Kumaran, the man who wielded the music baton for Poo. Pasanga-fame Vimal and debutant Helen play the lead roles in this film.
